OUCH!!

Ok, mine will be brief with a few stats from the time trial Saturday and the race Sunday. The first mile or so of the time trial had a cross wind where I averaged about 22 mph, took a right turn straight into the wind and averaged 15-16 mph, took the turn at mile 9 or so and couldn't pedal fast enough. My top gear was 53-12. I ended up with a pedal as fast as possible, tuck, coast, and wait to slow enough to pedal again. My average speed was 20.9 and top speed was 52!. There were no steep descents so you can imagine how fast I was spinning. I wish I had a 56-11 combination. I'll have to work on that.
Sunday's race started off very slow in the 3's as Zak described about the 4's. We were doing 12-13 mph when I decided to slowly ride off the front. I knew I wouldn't stay with the pack for the entire race so I figured I would try and get to the base of the climbing first. Getting there first with a little time would allow me to climb at my own pace seeing as how I almost immediately dropped out of the back on the pack in the mountain climb race the day before. The pack actually allowed me to get all the way to the observatory at the top before they caught me. It was a great confidence booster being able to do that but I still knew I wouldn't last. Jaime flatted on the climb, John stopped due to shifting difficulty (I think he was looking for that 27 tooth that he didn't have), and they both chased back on together at the top of the climb. I managed to hang on to the turn around point and watched the pack ride away. I went from being able to attain a HR of 180 or so on the first climbing portion of the race to 150 for the second half. It was all painful from the turn around to the last descent. Average speed was 17.8 mph and top speed was 47.7. Ft. Davis had all the descents that required braking going into them to maintain control.
This last weekend was a great experience that I may not try to repeat. I'll opt for the other race if there's a choice next time. But I would recommend it for anyone who's willing to find out how well they can climb against the rest of the pack.
We got home last night at about 1:30 am and we're still trying to recover from it.
See you at the crit,
Jeromie
