Membership Info
REI AUSTIN CYCLING TEAM
Member Information and Benefits
Who can join the Team, how much does it cost, and how can I be a member?
Anyone can join from the general public to employees of REI. The basic membership fee is $25.00 and is renewed annually. All you have to do is fill out a membership form, pay your fee, and sign the release of liability. The forms can be found at REI by asking for a team representative, asking a board member outside of the store, or just leave us a message at REI or by e-mail (see below for details).
Is there clothing available for the Team and how much does it cost?
Included on your membership form, you may purchase team clothing or you can purchase clothing as needed. Clothing and specific sizes may be limited at times between reorders and clothing will be sold on a "first come, first serve" basis including orders. We are in the process of ordering clothing for 2002. Costs for 2002 clothing are as follows:
Short sleeve jersey $45
Long sleeve jersey $55
Shorts $45
Bibs $55
What benefits do I get for being a member?
Since REI is the title sponsor of the team, active members will receive a 15% discount on all cycling purchases, a 30% discount on cycling clinics, a 30% discount on shop services, and the ability to "Pro-Deal" at least one bicycle per year on approved lines and with approval from the team board. The team will also offer any other products or services direct to the members from additional sponsors that are acquired. For competing members of the team, there will be an incentive program in order to reward them for their performance. There is a form available to fill out for reimbursement and the incentives are as follows:
First Place 100% of entry reimbursed
Second Place 90% of entry reimbursed
Third Place 80% of entry reimbursed
Fourth Place 70% of entry reimbursed
Fifth Place 60% of entry reimbursed
Sixth Place 50% of entry reimbursed
Finally, one of the biggest benefits of being a member of the team is in the ability to get exactly out of the team what you choose. If you are new to the sport and want to learn and develop, if you race and are looking for some performance rewards, if you don't like to ride alone, or you just want to be a part of a fun group, it's all there.
Is the team registered with USAC?
The team is registered on an annual basis with both the USCF and NORBA. Affiliation with the USAC provides that the team will receive all of the insurance, event, and organizational benefits that will only protect the membership. For USCF and NORBA members, you will be able to list the team on your license and in many cases, avoid increased costs for "unattached" riders. The team number is 9515 and is listed as "REI Austin" Cycling Team.
What commitments do I have to make to the team?
Since the team must host one event per year, all members are expected to volunteer for at least that single or any of the other events the team is involved in. If you are interested in a Pro-Deal then you must show a commitment to the team and REI by consistent volunteering at team events, participation in competitive and non-competitive events, and a presence on team / group rides.
What kind of communication is there within the team?
There is a phone / contact list produced and distributed on request. Also, E-mail and telephone calls will be used along with the REI "Trailhead" newsletter in order communicate any major developments. Events and rides will be made available as soon as possible but the website is the best source for ride information or interests. Our website can be found at: www.gardehouse.com/reibike.
How is the team structured?
There is a team director and other individuals involved in the organization and operations of the team that make up a board but all members are encouraged to participate and volunteer for whatever they are interested in. Rides and events will have a leader in order to coordinate and be a contact for any interested persons.
