Dear Friends,
Today was the last race of Superweek 2002. I knew today was going to be
tough, because my legs were achy and I was fatigued -- and this was during
my warm up.
The course was flat and fast. We averaged 25.5 mph for 43 minutes. It was
all I could do to just stay with the field. A few riders fell of the back
each lap or so. I wanted to move up by means other than the attrition of
other riders, but my legs didn't want to cooperate today. Each time I stood
up to accelerate, I wasn't sure if my legs were going to hold. Now I know
what my legs feel like after four straight days of racing. So I stayed
towards the back. As usual in the Cat 4 races up here, there were several
stupid crashes, which I avoided.
The good news of the day was that my pedals and drivetrain felt great. I
managed to produce a decent sprint in the end to move up about 10 places in
the field.
All in all, it was a great experience coming up here. 8 days of racing
(with 3 rest days) has definitely boosted my confidence and fitness. Plus
doing 6 criteriums has given me experience in my weakest type of race.
After a few weeks, my body should recover and I'll be stronger than ever!
Thanks for reading. I don't expect to travel to any more national cycling
events this year. If you don't want any future email let me know and I'll
take you off my list. ;)
David
