The open race had 14 starters, among them were Jason Sager, Billy, Robby Robinette, Will Ross, and Barry Lee - all Cat 1s and 2s. Cary and Jeromie were in an early break of about 6 riders, including Sager. Thinking it would stick, I spent my time on the front of the rest of the field - keeping the pace high to create enough pain that attacks would be discouraged but not going fast enough to close the gap. However, Robby eventually jumped the group, and bridged about half-way before he got stuck. That was bad for the lead break because it created a target for our group. Robby rode scared trying to keep from getting caught and still to make contact with the lead group, and guys in our group started attacking me. Somebody in the lead group slowed for the descending radius turn and we made contact a few seconds later. The next lap was a prime, which Jeromie took, and then, a lap later, Sager made his move. I saw (actually more like "sensed") his move and accordingly moved up the field with him. On the little incline he and I gapped the group and then accelerated through the series of turns. I was thinking "deja-vous all over again" (last week it was me and Sager in a 2 man break that held). Billy bridged to us and that was it - hammertime. We hammered for a few laps, I took a prime, and then I got gapped. For about 2 laps I was solo, and then Will (who'd left the group) caught my wheel. At that point the officials announced 4 laps to go. Will sat on my wheel for all of these last laps and then sprinted past me at the finish. I was 4th and think that Jeromie was 8th.
Some stats:
Average speed: 25.7 mph
Average cadence: 102
Max cadence: 120
Average HR: 166
Max HR: 181
Prime #1: dinner for two at the Yellow Rose (Jeromie)
Prime #2: six-pack of dos-equis (Jaime)
(With these primes, does anybody sense a trend?)
Tactical Lesson #1:
Never, even in a training race, assume that another rider will do the honorable/sporting thing after sucking your wheel and let you take the order of finish. If you want it, you have to take it. If you don't take it, then don't cry about it later.
